Life is not easy,so I'd like to say “When anything happens, believe in yourself.” When I was a young boy,I was so shy that I dare not talk to anyone. My classmates often laughed at me.I was sad but could do nothing.Later, something happened, and it changed my life.It was an English speech contest. My English teacher asked me to take part in it.What a terrible idea! It meant I had to speak before all the teachers and students of my school!
“Come on,boy, believe in yourself. You are sure to win.” Then my teacher and I talked about many different topics. At last I chose the topic “Believe in yourself”.I tried my best to remember all the speech and practiced it over 100 times. With my teacher's great love,I did well in the contest.I could hardly believe my ears when the news came that I had won the first place.I heard the cheers from the teachers and students. Those classmates who once looked down on me,now all said “Congratulations!” to me.My teacher hugged (拥抱) me and cried excitedly.
Since then, everything has changed for me.When I do anything,I try to tell myself to be sure and I will find myself. This is true not only for a person but also for a country.

Believe it or not, optical illusion(视觉错觉),can cut highway accidents.Japan is a case in point. It has reduced car accidents on some roads by nearly 75 percent using a simple optical illusion.
Bent stripes, called chevrons(人字型)painted on the roads made drivers think that they are driving faster than they really are,and thus drivers slow down. Now the American Automobile Association Foundation for Traffic Safety in Washington D.C,is planning to repeat Japan's success.Starting next year, the foundation will paint chevrons and other patterns of stripes on selected roads around the country to test how well the patterns reduce highway accidents.High speed plays a major role in as much as one fifth of all deadly traffic accidents, according to the foundation. To help reduce those accidents, the foundation will carry out its tests in areas where speed related dangers are the greatest curves, exit slopes(斜坡),traffic circles, and bridges. Some studies suggest that straight, horizontal(水平的)bars painted across roads can cut the average speed of drivers in half. However, traffic often returns to full speed within months as drivers become used to seeing the painted bars.Chevrons, scientists say,not only give drivers the impression that they are driving faster than they really are but also make a road appear to be narrower. The result is a longer lasting reduction in highway speed and the number of traffic accidents.

The very wealthy English Baron Fitzgerald had only one child,a son,who understandably was the apple of his eye.His wife died when the child was in his early teens. So Fitzgerald devoted himself to fathering the kid.Unfortunately the son died in his late teens.
Meanwhile,Fitzgerald's wealth greatly increased. He spent a lot on art works of the masters.Later Fitzgerald himself became seriously ill. Before his death,he had carefully prepared his will as to how his wealth would be settled—to sell his entire collection at an auction(拍卖).

The poor—quality painting didn't receive any bidders…except one—the old servant who had served the son and loved him,and who for emotional reasons offered the only bid.
As soon as the servant bought the painting for less than one English pound, the auctioneer stopped the bidding and asked the lawyer to read again from the will. The crowd became quiet, and the lawyer read from the will:“Whoever buys the painting of my son gets all my collection.”Then the auction was over.
